Inherited from Proto-Slavic *junakъ, from *junъ (young) +‎ *-akъ (inherited into -ак (-ak)). Compare јунец (junec, bullock). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic юнакъ (junakŭ), Bulgarian юна́к (junák), Slovak jonák, Polish junak.
