Persian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Persian ʾpwš (apōš), from Avestan 𐬀𐬞𐬀𐬋𐬱𐬀 (apaōša), derived from Proto-Iranian *apauša (“unthriving”).
Earlier interpretations included Proto-Iranian *apa-uša (“burning away”), however for phonetical reasons this is impossible. Traditional folk etymology in the Dādestān ī Dēnīg interpreted it as āb (water) + ōš (destruction), "(having) the destruction of water".
