From an alternative form of Aramaic מַּרָא (marrā), from Akkadian 𒄑𒈥 (marru [GEŠMAR]); compare also in Classical Syriac ܡܪܐ (marrā), Arabic مَرّ (marr) and Ancient Greek μάρρον (márrhon).
