From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mruHdʰí, from Proto-Indo-European *mluHdʰí (2nd person singular imperative of *mlewH- (to say, tell)). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬭𐬏𐬌𐬜𐬌 (mrūiδi, say!, 2nd person singular imperative of 𐬨𐬭𐬀𐬊 (mrao, to say)).

      इ॒ह प्र ब्रू॑हि यत॒मः सो अ॑ग्ने॒ यो या॑तु॒धानो॒ य इ॒दं कृ॒णोति॑।
      तमा र॑भस्व स॒मिधा॑ यविष्ठ नृ॒चक्ष॑स॒श्चक्षु॑षे रन्धयैनम्॥
      ihá prá brūhi yatamáḥ só agne yó yātudhā́no yá idáṃ kṛṇóti.
      támā́ rabhasva samídhā yaviṣṭha nṛcákṣasaścákṣuṣe randhayainam.
      Here tell this forth, O Agni: whosoever is, he himself, or acts as, a demon,
      Him grasp, O you Most Youthful, with your fuel. To the Mati-seer's eye give him as loot.
