[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀤𑀁𑀟 (daṃḍa), from Sanskrit दण्ड (daṇḍa), from a substrate language, possibly Munda (compare Mundari ଦାଣ୍ଡି (dāṇḍi, “small stick”) and Santali ᱫᱚᱬᱴᱚ (dôṇṭô, “thick stick, club”)) or Dravidian (compare Malayalam തണ്ട് (taṇṭŭ, “stick, club”)). Cognate with Bengali ডান্ডা (ḍanḍa), Hindustani ڈنڈا / डंडा (ḍaṇḍā), and Punjabi ڈنڈا / ਡੰਡਾ (ḍaṇḍā)
