Burmese
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Inherited from Old Burmese ကြိယ်း, from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *grəj (“copper”). Cognate with Tibetan གྲི (gri, “knife”) (STEDT). Luce's comparison with Old Chinese 錢 (OC *ʔslenʔ, *zlen, “coin (copper)”) seems untenable phonetically.[1]

- Romanization: MLCTS: kre: • ALA-LC: kreʺ • BGN/PCGN: kye: • Okell: ceì

Etymology 2
[edit]From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *krəj (“dirt, filth”); cognate with Jingpho [script needed] (khə grəwi, “idem”) (STEDT). Said Tibeto-Burman root appears to be related to, though not allofamic, with Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kləj (“body dirt, excrement”) (whence Old Chinese 屎 (OC *hliʔ, *hri, “excrement”)).
Pronunciation
