Burmese

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

Inherited from Old Burmese ကြိယ်း, from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *grəj (copper). Cognate with Tibetan གྲི (gri, knife) (STEDT). Luce's comparison with Old Chinese (OC *ʔslenʔ, *zlen, “coin (copper)”) seems untenable phonetically.[1]

Etymology 2

[edit]

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *krəj (dirt, filth); cognate with Jingpho [script needed] (khə grəwi, idem) (STEDT). Said Tibeto-Burman root appears to be related to, though not allofamic, with Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kləj (body dirt, excrement) (whence Old Chinese (OC *hliʔ, *hri, “excrement”)).
