Etymology[edit]

First element either from Proto-Germanic *frawaz (quick) or *frawjaz, *frawjô, (“lord, Freyr”). Second element *ᚱᚨᛞᚨᛉ (rādaz) is from Proto-Germanic *rēdaz (advice, counsel), same as in ᚺᚨᚷᛁᚱᚨᛞᚨᛉ (hagiradaʀ), compare second element in Old High German Kuonirāt. Note the shift of Proto-Germanic to ā, also seen in the Old Norse descendant ráð.
