Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *erfaz. Possibly related to Old Norse jarpr (brown), Old English eorp (brown; dark, dusky), from Proto-Germanic *erpaz (light brown), in which case from Proto-Indo-European *h₁erbʰ-, cognate with Ancient Greek ὀρφνός (orphnós, dark brown).
