Etymology
[edit]From 振り (buri, “pretense”) + 子 (ko, “child”). Coined in the 1980s.[1][2]

- Pachinko wa mō nichijō da. Dorinku zai de sei o tsuke supōtsu shi, keizai shi no kaburan o yomi, karaoke wa doenka. You to tokkuri o taosu. Kuwae tabako no unten de, hiza ni shinbun hasande no tachigui soba. To mā, kawayui “burikko” no taikyoku mitaina, sonna gyaru no ossan ka wa “oshare o shitsukushite no gyaku oshare” toiu mikata mo aru.

She smokes while driving, holds the newspaper between her knees, and eats noodles standing up. Well, she looks the opposite of a cute “burikko”, that girl becoming a man thinks “lack of stylishness is an opposite style”.

- 自分がぶりっ子しているときも、それに自覚的や女であることから、降りられないのだから。あとはどうやって自分を演出するか、が問題でたい人は、もっと上手にぶりっ子できるようになるでしょう。
- Jibun ga burikko shite iru toki mo, sore ni jikakuteki ya onna dearu koto kara, orirarenai no dakara. Ato wa dō yatte jibun o enshutsu suru ka, ga mondai detai hito wa, motto jōzu ni burikko dekiru yō ni naru deshō.
- Even when one is acting burikko, that is self-consciously being a woman, they cannot stop. Later, if one sees this play-acting as a problem, they want to become better at burikko.
