Glyph origin[edit]
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *baːs) : semantic 土 (“earth”) + phonetic 阜 (OC *buʔ).
Etymology[edit]
A late formation (後起字). Earlier forms of southern Chinese toponyms using the character were often written with the homophone 步 (MC buH) in historical records dated from the Northern Wei to Ming dynasties, which has been conjectured to be a transcription of an earlier Kra-Dai word (Kang, 2010). Cf. 墟 (xū, “market”).

Usage notes[edit]
- Xiandai Hanyu Guifan Cidian (《现代汉语规范词典》) proscribes the use of the pronunciations fù and fǔ.
- Historically used as a suffix for many foreign port cities, such usage is now obsolete and replaced with 市 (shì, “city”).
