Etymology[edit]

From a Kam-Tai source (Mei, 1980; Schuessler, 2007); compare Proto-Tai *ɣwaːjᴬ (water buffalo), Sui kui² (water buffalo). Schuessler also considered (Later Han Chinese ŋuɨ) to be the same etymon.
