Etymology

Unknown. The word has been connected with αἰών (aiṓn, “lifetime”) and Sanskrit आयु (āyu, “life, vital force”) (< *h₂óyu), but this is formally improbable. Alternatively may be from Proto-Hellenic *walwólos, from Proto-Indo-European *welwel-, from the root *wel- (“to turn”).
