Etymology[edit]
Uncertain. Could be from unattested *ζᾱτός (*zātós), from the same root of δίζημαι (dízēmai, “to seek”), from Proto-Indo-European *yeh₂-, whence ζῆλος (zêlos, “zeal”) and ζημία (zēmía, “damage, loss”).
