From Proto-Turkic *čadan (scorpion). possibly from Middle Chinese (ʈʰˠaiH) with a final -n added.

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (čadan, scorpion; (astrology) Scorpio); Kazakh шаян (şaän, scorpion), Southern Altai сай (say, scorpion), Uzbek chayon (scorpion), Uyghur چايان (chayan, scorpion), Azerbaijani çayan, Turkish çıyan (scorpion).
