Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *xalupa. Further etymology unknown. Compare Ukrainian халу́па (xalúpa), Belarusian халу́па (xalúpa), Polish chałupa, Czech chalupa, Slovak chalupa, Upper Sorbian chałupa, Lower Sorbian chałupa. The connection to Ancient Greek κᾰλῠ́βη (kalúbē) and Ottoman Turkish قولبه (kulübe, kulıba) is not confirmed.
