The original spelling is բանդ (band), from Middle Iranian *band (bonds; prison). Compare Persian بند (band, tie, chain, shackle) and Central Kurdish بەندیخانە (bendîxane, prison). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰendʰ-.
