A Turkic borrowing, likely from Ottoman Turkish بورغو (burɣu, screw, auger). Cognate with Turkish burgu (screw, auger), Azerbaijani burğu (screw, drill, auger), Chagatai بورغو (burğu, screw, drill, auger), Kazakh бұрғы (būrğy, drill bit, auger) and others, a derivative of the stem in Ottoman Turkish بورمق (burmak, to twist) / Turkish burmak (to twist), Uzbek бурамоқ (buramoq, to twist), Kazakh бұрау (būrau, drill, auger; to twist), Bashkir бырау (bıraw, drill, auger) etc.
