Inherited from Prakrit 𑀚𑀸 () +‎ ـنا (-nā, verbal suffix), the first element of which is from Sanskrit या (, going).

The perfective form گیا (gayā) is from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀕𑀬 (gaya), from Sanskrit गत (gatá, gone).
