Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Aramaic חְלָזֹונָא / ܚܠܵܙܘܿܢܵܐ (ḥəlāzōnā, snail). This has been reckoned to be from Ancient Greek ἑλικών (helikṓn) or ἑλικόν (helikón), but visibly it bears the diminutive ending -ōnā, relating to a base verb “to crawl”, see حِسْل (ḥisl, young of a spiny-tailed lizard).
