Borrowed from Arabic حِنَّاء (ḥinnāʔ), from Middle Persian [Term?] (/⁠*hannāyēd⁠/, to smear, anoint) (compare Middle Persian 𐫀𐫗𐫇𐫅𐫃 (ʾnwdg /⁠annōdag⁠/, the anointed one, Messiah), whence Persian اندودن (andudan)).
