Etymology

Shape from Phoenician 𐤅 (w‬), whence also digamma ϝ (w). Name is Koine Greek: ὖ ψιλόν (û psilón) means "plain υ," in order to distinguish it from οι (oi), which had become identical in pronunciation. Displaced earlier ὖ (û).
