Etymology[edit]
- For the adjectival and agentive suffix, merged from Sanskrit -इक (-ika, adjectival and agentive suffix) and -ई (-ī, adjectival suffix), from Proto-Indo-European *-ikos and *-iHs respectively. Also influenced by the cognate Classical Persian ـی (-ī) and the unrelated Arabic ـِيّ (-iyy).
- For the feminine suffix, from Sanskrit -ई (-ī), from Proto-Indo-European *-ih₂.
