1135, from Rhenish dialect Dusseldorp, from the river Düssel (from Proto-Germanic *þusila-, from Proto-Germanic *þausōną (to surge, roar, flow)) + Dorf (village). The first element is related to the root of tosen (to roar, rage), Icelandic þysja (to rush), Old English þys (tempest, storm), Old Norse þyssa (uproar, tumult).
