From Ukrainian Донба́с (Donbás), abbreviation of Доне́цький басе́йн (Donécʹkyj baséjn, “Donets Basin”), after Доне́ць (Donécʹ, “Donets River”) + басе́йн (baséjn, “basin”). Compare Donbass, from Russian.
