From Proto-Indo-European *séǵʰos (control, power), from root *seǵʰ- (to hold, overpower).[1] Cognate with Sanskrit सहस् (sáhas, force, power, victory), and the Ancient Greek verb ἔχω (ékhō, I have, I own).
