Etymology[edit]

First attested as Westlaren in 1936. Compound of west (west-, western) and the dative plural form of Old Dutch lar (intensively cultivated forest, forest pasture). The toponym is of a recent date and was formed after older toponyms such as Midlaren and Zuidlaren.
