Etymology

Central German byform of Zotte (clotted flock of hair) with open-syllable lengthening before -t-. Originally in the vulgar expression Zot(t)en reißen (to remove clotted hairs from the pubic or anal region), then used figuratively for the use of foul language (15th century).
