Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bálˀtas (faint, white) (compare Latvian balts), which is generally derived from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (white) and compared with Proto-Slavic *bòlto (swamp; mud); see there for more discussion on the root.[1] Compare also Proto-Slavic *bělъ (white).
