Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Dutch baubijn, from Old French babuin, perhaps from baboe (grimace).

The spelling with -iaen (modern spelling: -iaan) first appears in the sixteenth century, becoming common in the seventeenth century, perhaps due to the Arminian controversy as a rhyme for arminiaan.
