From Proto-Vietic *-ciːm, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *cim ~ *ciim ~ *ciəm ~ *caim ~ *cum (“bird”); cognates include Mon ဂစေံ (həcem, “bird”), Mang θɤm⁶ and Bahnar sem (“bird”). Munda cognates include Santali ᱥᱤᱢ (sim, “chicken”).
