From Proto-Germanic *gastandaną, equivalent to ġe- +‎ standan. Cognate with Old Saxon gistandan, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌽 (gastandan). Compare Old High German gistantan.
