From Proto-Albanian *grunā, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵr̥h₂nóm.[1] Cognate to Proto-Balto-Slavic *źírˀna (Latvian žìrnis (pea), Old Church Slavonic зрьно (zrĭno)), Proto-Celtic *grānom (Old Irish grán, Breton greun), Proto-Germanic *kurną (Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌽 (kaurn), English corn), Proto-Italic *grānom (Latin grānum), Persian خرمن (xarman, grain).
