From Old High German guot, from Proto-West Germanic *gōd, from Proto-Germanic *gōdaz, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰedʰ-.
Cognate with German gut, Dutch goed, English good, Icelandic góður, Gothic 𐌲𐍉𐌸𐍃 (gōþs).
