Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *kookka, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *hōkaz. Cognate with Karelian kuokku and Veps kokš, as well as possibly koukku.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]kuokka
- hoe (agricultural tool consisting of a long handle with a flat blade fixed perpendicular to it at the end)
- mattock (agricultural tool whose blades are at right angles to the body)
Usage notes
[edit]No strict distinction between hoes and mattocks is observed. To distinguish, a mattock may be called kaksipäinen (“double-ended”) or kaksiteräinen (“two-bladed”) and a hoe (somewhat rarely) yksipäinen (“single-ended”) or yksiteräinen (“one-bladed”).
