Borrowed from Medieval Latin prŏgnōsticāre, from prognōsticus, from Ancient Greek προγνωστικός (prognōstikós, foreknowing), from πρό- (pró-) + γνωστικός (gnōstikós, of or for knowing, good at knowing), from γιγνώσκω (gignṓskō, to learn to know, to perceive, to mark, to learn).
