Etymology

Particularly: “Both Shorto (2006) and Schuessler (2007) are bad proposals. Shorto's is likely another ghost; the Kuy word is isolated in its own branch, while in position to borrow from Khmer ក្រោយ (kraoy). While Schuessler's was, as usual, very generous with his suggestions when it comes to Austroasiatic, while there's not a single phoneme that could correspond with each other between Vietnamese on one hand and Chinese (MC lewX) (as well as loans from it like Thai แล้ว (lɛ́ɛo) and Iu Mien liuz) on the other. I don't have any alternative etymology (with cognates) at hand, but I'm quite sure that the modern senses are derived from the archaic verbal sense of "to (go) pass" and/or the adjectival sense of "free, unoccupied", both quite readily attested in pre-modern poems.”
