Etymology

From Old Danish sun, Old Norse sonr, from Proto-Germanic *sunuz, cognate with Swedish son, English son, German Sohn. The word goes back to Proto-Indo-European *suHnús, which is also the source of Sanskrit सूनु (sūnú), Lithuanian sūnùs.
