[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Chiefly Low German, also to a lesser degree Central German variant of schlecht. From Middle Low German slicht and northern Middle High German sliht, both “flat, straight, simple”, from Proto-Germanic *slihtaz. Cognate with Dutch slecht, English slight. Since the 17th century there were attempts to use the i-form specifically in the older sense as against the new meaning of “bad” which schlecht had developed. This semantic split between both forms was only completed during the 19th century, however. Compare also schlichten (“to mediate”).
