French

Etymology

[edit]

From é- +‎ marge +‎ -er.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /e.maʁ.ʒe/
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

[edit]

émarger

  1. to initial (a document)
  2. to sign, sign in
  3. to annotate, make marginal notes in
  4. to draw one's salary

Conjugation

[edit]

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written émarge- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
