From Middle Irish uball, from Old Irish ubull[1] (compare Scottish Gaelic ubhal), from Proto-Celtic *abūl (compare Welsh afal), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ébōl (compare English apple, Lithuanian obuolỹs).
