Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἄπνοος (ápnoos). By surface analysis, ά- (á-, alpha privative) +‎ -πνοος (-pnoos, of breath). See πνέω (pnéō) and for stem πνο-, πνοή (pnoḗ).
