Etymology

[edit]

According to Beekes, the word is not related to Thessalian place names Γόννος (Gónnos), Γόννοι (Gónnoi) and Γονοῦσσα (Gonoûssa), nor to γόνυ (gónu, knee), and is instead Pre-Greek word, in view of the variations.
