Ancient Greek

Etymology

[edit]

The word has been compared with Lithuanian guōlis (den), Latvian guoļa (lair, nest) and Armenian կաղաղ (kaġaġ, hole), from Proto-Indo-European *guol-. However, this comparison is uncertain and the influence of φωλεός (phōleós) must be reckoned.
