Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The word has been connected with καίω (kaíō, to burn) as "firewood", by comparison with the synonymous δᾱλός (dālós, firebrand). However, according to Beekes, a Pre-Greek origin is much more likely.[1]
