Etymology

Inherited from Hellenistic Koine Greek πατρυιός (patruiós) with simplication of spelling.[1] From πατήρ m (patḗr, father), stem πατρ-. The ancient spelling with ⟨υι⟩ in analogy to the feminine μητρυιά (mētruiá).[2]
