Alternative forms[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Rebracketing of το (to), equalling[1] Aramaic אַגָּנָא / אַגָּאנָא / ܐܓܢܐ (ʾaggānā), Hebrew אַגָּן (ʾaggā́n), Ugaritic 𐎀𐎂𐎐 (ảgn), Akkadian 𒌓𒅗𒁇 (UD.KA.BAR /agannum/), from the Semitic generic terms for a bowl, or acquired from a third source, as also Egyptian jkn (“bowl”), which however is also a candidate for borrowing.
Pronunciation[edit]
- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /tá.ɡɛː.non/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /ˈta.ɡe̝.non/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /ˈta.ʝi.non/
