From earlier Днѣпръ (Dnipr), from Old East Slavic Дънѣпръ (Dŭněprŭ), from Proto-Slavic *Dъněprъ, from Thracian *duno- ipro, related to Persian دنیدن (danidan, to hasten, run), and to hydronyms like Ibr, Ibar, etc.
