Etymology

From бес- (bes-) +‎ словеса́ (slovesá) +‎ -ный (-nyj). Synchronically, based on словеса́ (slovesá, words, verbiage). Diachronically, словес- (sloves-) is the original stem of сло́во (slóvo, word), which was originally an s-stem. Compare слове́сный (slovésnyj).
