Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *blekota (bleating, mumbling), of onomatopoeic origin. The semantic shift from "mumbling" to "henbane" is the result of henbane's toxicity, as henbane poisoning causes hallucinations accompanied by raving.
