From Proto-Turkic *bürülgen (a type of a berry), perhaps from *bürü (bud; berry).

Cognate with Tatar бөрлегән (börlegän, stone bramble), Kazakh бүлдірген (büldırgen, wild strawberry), Kumyk бюрюлген (bürülgen, blackberry), Kyrgyz бүлдүркөн (büldürkön, blackberry; stone bramble; wild strawberry), Uyghur بولجۇرگەن (boljurgen, strawberry; blackberry), Azerbaijani böyürtkən (blackberry), Turkish böğürtlen (blackberry).
